The Hicksville Chamber of Commerce welcomes all of you to the Chamber's 6th Annual Street Fair. We offer everyone an old fashioned day of shopping and greeting friends that you have not seen in a while. Years ago you could only find this kind of entertainment in the metro areas like N.Y.C. or you could travel all of the way to Riverhead (1 1/2 hours) for their huge Polish Festival. Today, these wonderful street fairs can be found scattered throughout Nassau and Suffolk.
We do not have to go to Little Italy and Chinatown, although that was part of the trek in going to visit the San Gennaro Festival (September, if I remember). Years ago vendors sold socks at booths. They are still there today, but a lot more booths are filled with the aromas of traditional festival foods. Ahhhh! That is what I call these foods. Memories triggered by the aromas are always the street festivals of yesteryear and today. Pizza, calamari, sausage & peppers, calzones, baked clams, stuffed mushrooms, kielbasa & sauerkraut, perogie and onions fried in butter, waffles w/whipped cream (Belgium), spanakopita, etc. One word of advice... do not eat before you come to any fair. My favorites from last year were the sautéed perogies w/ onions. Not fried brown, just to warm up. Um-Ummm.
There are free rides for children under 12. The first 500 children accompanied with an adult, will receive a free t-shirt. Please, only 1 shirt each. Free balloons will be available. Last year Optimum gave out balloons and the colors were blue and white, their colors. This year I do not know if they will repeat. I know the Chamber shirts are hot Lemon Yellow with black trim and writing.
There is a surprise in the park. Come and look at the trains that Hicksvilleites road in when Valentine Hicks was around in the mid 1800's. The “John Bull” is in the park, an icon to the establishing of Hicksville. Read story in other areas of the website about the Installation of the John Bull.
Welcome to the Hicksville Chamber of Commerce 2008 Street Fair 2008.
Enjoy!!! |
